This post is a first for me in that I'm typing (or tapping) it in on an iPhone using our
Blogsmith CMS. No, there's not a Blogsmith iPhone app that I'm aware of, and I'm not using Safari on the iPhone to pull up our web portal. Instead, I'm controlling my office iMac from about 16 miles away using my iPhone and
LogMeIn Ignition.
LogMeIn is a remote access and control application for Macs and PCs that creates a secure connection between two computers by having each logged into a secure server. LogMeIn Ignition adds the ability to control a Mac or PC from your iPhone. To test Ignition, I set up a LogMeIn Free for Mac account and then loaded the app onto my iPhone 3G. How did it work? Read on for more details.

Version 9.06 of
X-Plane 9 has been released from Laminar Research, and if you haven't updated your iPhone or iPod touch with the new edition, you'll want to do that as soon as possible.
X-Plane has been updated for free over the last few versions with the most-requested features that users asked for:
- More flying regions and airports; the initial release had only the area around Innsbruck, Austria. Now you can fly around Southern California, Hawaii, and San Francisco as well.
- More airplanes. The Piper Malibu single and Beech King-Air twin have been added to the X-Plane 9 fleet.
- EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System). For budding or real pilots, having a real "glass cockpit" adds to the realism of X-Plane 9. According to Laminar Research, pilots are actually beginning to use X-Plane 9 Airliner (a sister product) for practice prior to simulator check flights!
- A much improved flight model. This makes the handling characteristics of each aircraft type much closer to the real thing.
- A pause button so you can actually get back to reality on occasion, then return to a flight in progress.
- Better animation frame rate for more realism.
The app is still US$9.99 and is available in the
App Store (click opens iTunes).

The iControlPad bore many signs of vaporware: desirability, no official authorization and a low budget. We now know that there's at least one working version, and that promises of production aren't, you know, lies.
Here we can see the iControlPad wrapped around an iPhone, playing Quake. It works! But a few things stand out. First, there' a discernible lag. This is probably a software issue, as I can't imagine where along this short line of hardware connections that kind of latency could crop up. The developers say they'll have bits of source code ready for developers who want to include controls in their apps, so I hope it's a little more optimized by the time that's seeded.
Unfortunately, it's clear that "developers", means homebrew developers, as there's no indication that ZodTTD is going to get Apple's blessing on this device any time soon—something that they'd need if they wanted to see integration with App Store games. In others words, this'll only work on Jailbroken games, at least for now. That means no Brothers in Arms with a proper controller, but at least we'll be able to play our emulators properly now. While the
iControlPad still isn't available for mass consumption, homebrew developer
ZodTTD has released a video of him using it to play quake4iphone. Hard to tell just how well the gamepad works, but it's gotta be a helluva lot easier than blocking the screen with your greasy digits. Last we heard it had gone into production, but still no word on price or release date. Video embedded after the break.
