PostHeaderIcon Apple Japanese webpage seems to show iPhone 4S a little early.

From http://www.apple.com/jp/retail/ginza/. The translation says something about "selecting a carrier," which means that Apple might be adding carriers in Japan. Right now it's only Softbank, if we recall correctly.

TUAW staffers and volunteers add this translation: ""On October 14, it will launch at 8 a.m. at the Apple Store. Let our staff help choose the carrier and rate plan that's right for you. Our staff will have your iPhone ready to use before leaving the store. Learn more (link)"

The dates tie in to our previous coverage of employee blackout dates.

PostHeaderIcon Wiping down your iPhone for resale

It's time to hand off your old iPhone to its new owner, but you definitely want to scrub it clean of all your data beforehand. Simple enough: in the Settings app, tap General, then scroll down to Reset and tap it. The option to 'Erase All Content and Settings' is the one you want; it will remove any trace of personalization and all your installed apps, returning your phone to factory-fresh condition.

Depending on which iOS device you're resetting, the process may take quite a while (older iPod touch and iPhones pre-3GS don't support hardware encryption, so they actually have to wipe all the onboard memory byte by byte). Be sure you're plugged into power or that the device is fully charged before you begin.

PostHeaderIcon Report suggests Android’s lead over iOS has stopped growing

Android, iOS and RIM's BlackBerry OS are at a standstill in the smartphone market. Results from Nielsen's May survey show that Android is holding steady at 37% market share, iOS at 27% and BlackBerry at 22%. Even among the smaller players like Windows Phone and webOS, this stalemate situation holds true.

One thing that is going up is data usage, especially among Android users. On average, Android users download 582 MB of data per month. iOS users come in second with a 492 MB of usage and webOS is third with 448 MB per month. The bulk of this usage is app downloads followed by streaming online music and mobile radio. Wonder how these percentages will change once Apple unveils it new cloud services?

PostHeaderIcon Some spiffy cases for your Square credit card reader

As we noted last week, the Square credit card reader is now available in Apple Stores all around the country -- you buy the reader for $9.95, but get a $10 credit when you do so, so the only charges are what you rack up when actually accepting credit card payments. As we've said before, it's a pretty easy way to use cards, whether you just need money from a friend or have a small business that only occasionally takes payments.

But that reader is tiny and easily lost, so what's the best way to keep track of it? A special case, of course. Unpluggd has a few options for keychain cases built specifically to hold that little widget, from $10 up to the excellent case above for $25. Yes, it might seem a little strange to spend that much on a case for something that you essentially got for free. But if it helps you keep track of the reader and have it right there on hand when you need to take a big payment, it'll be worth it, right?

PostHeaderIcon iOS 4.1 jailbreak due on 10/10/10 10:10:10AM GMT

Joshua Hill (aka p0sixninja) has tweeted that a public iOS 4.1 jailbreak is imminent. The jailbreak, codenamed greenpois0n, is due for release on Sunday, October 10th, assuming there are no last minute stumbling blocks. This jailbreak leverages the SHAtter exploit developed by @pod2g, based on a crash discovered by Hill and is expected to work on newer iOS 4.1 devices, including the refreshed Apple TV, iPod touch 4G, and iPhone 4.

TUAW recently posted about a video created by the team showing the Apple TV jailbreak in action.

Thanks, Danny

PostHeaderIcon GV Connect app for Google Voice now available

GV Connect, the Google Voice client for the iPhone and iPod touch that caused quite a stir when it was pulled by Apple last year, has unexpectedly returned to the App Store. Developer Andreas Amann resubmitted the app last week following Apple's new documentation on App Store acceptance.

GV Connect is now available in the App Store for a cool $2.99.
